Ladies of the Trails : Video

A couple of months ago I mentioned that Jeff was doing some filming for 5 Peaks with myself and the Ladies of the Trails.  We had a super fun day on the trails shooting footage, and we did interviews another day, and to be honest I had no idea what exactly would come out of it.  Well, Jeff did a fantastic job creating this little short video that really speaks to what the Ladies group is all about – getting more women out on the trails when they’re afraid, intimidated, or just plain new to trail running.  I’m so impressed with how this turned out, even if I’m super self conscious about my own part in it.

Month of September – Training Recap

Don’t worry, I’m not going to miss September’s recap like I missed August!  In reality it’s a pretty sucky month with traveling, and twinges, so there’s not a ton to tell…

Total Road KMs : 21.5 kms

Total Trail KMs : ~104.5 kms

KMs raced during August : 15.5 kms

Total KMs this month : 126 kms

Total KM’s this year : 1888 kms

Hours running :  19 ish

Cross-training hours (Spinning, Grinds, Strength training) : Hmm…2 hours of Grinding is all I’ve got…second month in a month with only 2 Grinds :(

# of Grinds/BCMC’s : 2

How’s my month been?

This year is just flying by!  It was a good LIFE month with Weddings, and Vacay, and a big Birthday party.  It was a fun month, a busy month, but not an ideal “training” month.  I guess we could call it a stepback month, but that’s kind of crappy going into my next 50K ultra this weekend.

How’s my month been?

Very similar to July, August was a crap shoot.  3 races, and a lot of recovery was basically the theme of the month.  I didn’t hit my goal of 200 kms per month every month in 2013 this month, but I did race close to 100 kms, and that has to count for something.  Anyways, let’s break it down.

5Peaks – Whistler Trail Race – short & sweet

Home and relaxing on the couch after a whirlwind overnight trip to Whistler for the annual 5Peaks Whistler race on top of Blackcomb Mountain, I’m looking back at this morning, and I’ve decided that I’m going to see it as a success (I wasn’t so sure post race…)

I shaved exactly 3 minutes off last year’s time, on the same course, and last year I took over 5 mins off my time from 2011.  So, taking off 8 minutes in 2 years, it’s definitely forward progress.  But the truth of it is, I struggled, and have been struggling on these shorter/faster races.  I’ll elaborate on my full race recap, but for now, know that I’m actually excited to have the next 4 weeks off from racing.  I know I need the break, and I’m going to take full advantage and enjoy it.  The final 5Peaks race of the season, Buntzen Lake Sept 28, I’m going into it with fresh, not “just raced 83kms in the 2 weekends prior” legs!

Regardless, today was a great day in Whistler.

Inaugural 5Peaks Ladies of the Trails Group Run

It’s summer time in August, everyone is busy, and we only made the 5Peaks Ladies of the Trails announcement a mere 48 hours before, and with 4 different friends having to cancel within 2 hours before the run, I wondered if it would only be me running solo through Lower Seymour.

I shouldn’t have worried.  Dianna and her dance party pants was there, Chloe Jr. who excitingly has signed up for her very first trail race this Saturday at Whistler 5Peaks, and Jen, a gal off Twitter who is exactly the target market for these runs.  Jen has run road marathons, halfs, and 1 trail race (5Peaks Alice Lake), she loved the new trail experience, but doesn’t have trail friends, and is scared to go solo.  Perfect!

I should mention we will meet at my car – a charcoal Rogue with a Salomon logo on the side going forward.  I will try and park near the front row of the gravel parking lot at Lower Seymour.

We did one of my favorite loops – twin bridges/mystery/ned’s/fisherman’s/homestead which is just under 7kms in just over an hour.  It may have been a small group, but it was a mighty group, and it was a blast!  The inaugural run was a success!

After some stretching and laughs, we all headed over to Booster Juice for a smoothie, and a tailgate party at my car.  Next time, we need warm coats for after!!

If every Tuesday goes like this, it will easily become my favorite night of the week.  Hope to see more ladies out there next Tuesday!

Updates, Updates, Updates

I’m feeling under the weather today; a weekend of too much cheat foods, not enough sleep, and some aches and pains that are getting worse instead of better.  Sigh.  Definitely having a feeling sorry for myself moment right now.

But, there’s too much positivity in my life to let that get me down, so let’s focus on those shall we?

First off, this weekend in Manning Park at the Fat Dog 100, running the relay with a team of not quite blood relatives, but random relatives none the less, was so.much.fun!!  It was an absolute blast, and I’ve already got the wheels churning in my head coming up with great ideas for 2014!  I’ll be posting blogs this week of (1) full recap on each of the different legs, (2) the logistics and details behind this beast of a race, and (3) a post on the last 20 miles (33kms) of the course, which is a stand alone event, the last leg of the race, and just so happened to be the leg I was given.  Apparently my family hates me, since it is the hardest leg of the race, and I put my anal-retentive planning on the back burner, going into the race blind, and that was a dumb, dumb idea.  Turns out there was over 2000m’s of climbing in that last leg! HAH! Oops.

The other fantastic news is that I’m so very excited to introduce to you…

Long Weekend Love – Saturday Surprises!

So yesterday I told you about my Friday of the long weekend, so today it’s all about Saturday.

Saturday was FULL of surprises, and not all the good kind!

In the morning, Jay and I along with Shannon & Joel (local 5Peaks runners), modeled some of the 5Peaks merchandise that is going to be for sale coming up soon.  The photographer was the amazing Rob Shaer, and we had a blast during the shoot!  The only thing missing was coffee and donuts…

Long Weekend Love – Friday Fun!

Yesterday was BC day up here, which celebrates the amazing province I live in, British Columbia, and gives us a LONG weekend right smack in the middle of summer!

Jay and I had a wedding on Friday, so I took Friday off of work as well, giving myself a 4 day weekend!!  I wanted to take advantage of the amazing weather we’ve been treated to lately, but I didn’t want to kill my body/legs the weekend before Squamish50!  Besides, we all know what happened the last time I started to “taper”, you know the whole badly rolled ankle turned to calf pain the day before KneeKnacker, ya not exactly the game plan I had in mind.

How’s my month been?

Gosh. July has been a roller coaster of a month.  There is no other way to explain it.  It’s been a struggle all around, but particularly because I didn’t want to or expect to go into KneeKnacker with an injury and a head cold (obviously), and it really affected me leading up to, on race day, and in my recovery after as well.  BUT, we’re on the upswing heading into August, and I’m feeling positive.
