I love weekends.

We have been so busy that weekends haven’t really been weekends, and life kind of passes by like a blur.  There’s fun and all, but without the down times, it’s hard to really embrace and enjoy the good.

But this weekend, this weekend we had NOTHING on the schedule.  Some pencil markings, but a whole lot of nothing important or concrete.

So what did we do?

A whole lot of FUN and relaxation!  And maybe a bunch of sillyness too!

Humbling.

If you’ve been reading my blog since last summer you know that one of my favourite workouts of all time is the Grouse Grind.  Commonly known as “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster” the Grind is a just under 3K climb up a mountain in North Vancouver.  It’s been updated over the years and it’s mostly stairs now, and if you’re able to make yourself uncomfortable, you can get into a great rhythm and push it, and it truly is a workout that is unlike anything else I’ve done.

Lots of people don’t enjoy the crowds and the amount of stairs, but I love challenging myself against my previous times, and chipping away at my fastest times, and most of all, I enjoy passing people.   I consider everyone that I pass on the way up as a “kill” and I keep count.  Yep, I love that extra competition that I can tap into during a workout.  Call me a weirdo, but it’s something about the Grind that I just enjoy so much.

And then the view at the top, well that’s always rewarding, and whether you’re running down the mountain on the BCMC or taking the gondola down, it’s always satisfying to know that you climbed all that ways up, on your own 2 legs.

Always satisfying, and usually for me, it’s something I’m proud of.  You noticed that usually didn’t you?  I did the Grind on Thursday and the feeling I felt during and after wasn’t empowering, strong, or anything positive.  It was embarrassment.

Progress: Slow & Steady with a dash of Yoga.

For the record: I am nowhere near announcing that I am back, or even close to back, but I have been cleared to do some hiking, and to venture out a bit with some updated (harder) physio exercises, and some more exercise in general instead of focusing on icing and resting the foot.

So, what better way to start off my hiking comeback then a trek up Grouse Mountain with Mom, Cathy and Baby Theo?

How’s my month been?

December was all about my big race of the year.  It was all that mattered this month, getting through the race safely and without injuries, and then recovering the rest of the month.  And I’d like to say that I pretty much excelled at these tasks and leaving December, and 2013, I feel pretty darn good.

How’s my month been?

November was a great month for the most part.  It was a hard month because it was our November Streaking Challenge, and so I had to run a minimum of 5K every day.  But, I succeeded, and I do feel like after a bit of rest after 31 straight days of running, I will be stronger from this experiment.

Trail Ghost’s 40th Birthday BCMC

This Sunday, I’m headed up tio the BCMC to celebrate one of my fave people in trail running’s birthdays, Mr. Tom Craik.

Tom is doing a fun birthday event, challenging us to run (power hike) up the BCMC on Sunday morning, with the goal to arrive at the top, at 10am, without being passed by a hiker behind you!  So, you can pick any time goal you want, and attempt to get up in that time on  Sunday.  For example, if you think you can BCMC in 1 hour, you would email Tom, tell him 60 minutes, and then you would start yourself at 9am.  If someone else thinks 55 minutes, they would start themselves at 9:05.  The goal is just to make it to the top at 10 am in your allotted time, without the hikers from behind you passing you.

All details can be found at Tom’s blog here.

Everyone is invited, but you must get your time estimates into myself or to Tom before Friday!

Warning : there will be snow at least in the top 1/4 of the BCMC – come prepared!!!  And we will be hanging out with hot coffee and chatting at the top, so bring appropriate clothes and money!

xoxo

How’s my month been?

This year is just flying by!  It was a good LIFE month with Weddings, and Vacay, and a big Birthday party.  It was a fun month, a busy month, but not an ideal “training” month.  I guess we could call it a stepback month, but that’s kind of crappy going into my next 50K ultra this weekend.

How’s my month been?

Very similar to July, August was a crap shoot.  3 races, and a lot of recovery was basically the theme of the month.  I didn’t hit my goal of 200 kms per month every month in 2013 this month, but I did race close to 100 kms, and that has to count for something.  Anyways, let’s break it down.

Guest Post – Cathy Conquers Crown Mountain

Solana asked if I’d write a guest post while she’s away and I immediately offered to write one on Crown Mountain.  I’d hiked the Hanes Valley route this summer, which Solana ran, and since we’d both had to pass the Crown Mountain post without hiking up to the top, it was calling to me.

I’ve been hiking a lot more than running this summer.  The 5 Peaks races usually keep me in some sort of training through the summer.  My schedule is always a bit haphazard with the whole summer off work and other outdoor activities calling.  However, this year I had conflicts on both the Cypress and Blackcomb race days.  I don’t know about you, but I tend to stick to training much better when a race is looming, so I’d let my running fall a little by the wayside.  Feeling motivated by one last hike before the school season start, Mark and I felt hiking Crown Mountain was enough of a challenge for us, so off we went!  There was a voice in my head saying, “People run this, hiking it will be a breeze!”  Little did I know…
